Monthly Report: 8th February 2011

---------------------------------------------

Halo Everyone, It’s been a while not to make posting in this blog. In the recent time, the team of Students for tomorrow Indonesia has been working tirelessly in socializing to schools, preparing the event, and holding the seminars into a big success for all of us. This blog will cover the progress story from 8 January – 8 February 2011. Hopefully you enjoy reading it!

From 8 - 20 January, we have finished the socialization of the SFT program to 10 invited schools with diverse background and secure their students to participate in SFT. At the same time we spread this information to all over Jakarta and surrounding cities (Depok, Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi) by opening an open selection through website, facebook, and twitter. These endeavors resulted more than 80 applicants of students applying to join the program. These applicants registered themselves as a team consisting of 3-5 student members. With participant’s criteria consideration, we finally selected 53 eligible students from 13 different schools to participate in the program. This is really unexpectable that we could involve students from 13 diverse High schools, very diverse indeed.

On Sunday- 24 January 2011, Niwa-Mia-widi were invited to Trax FM radio to introduce the program of Students for Tomorrow 2011 to public and call for participants of student in Jakarta.This type of communication really worked out and was quite effective as the applicants that time increased significantly after this radio broadcasting took place.

On 29 January, HERE WE COME! The SFT’s Capacity building: Students Today, Leaders Tomorrow
From 9.00 am to 03.00 pm, this seminar was participated by 53 students from 13 Senior High schools. After the official opening ceremony, this seminar was started with a presentation on “soft Skill” by inside-job Trainer Pak Iwan Winanada, continued by the presentation from mbak Nana Nuraniyah about the “Project management”, and the talkshow about “Democaracy and Leadership” from Adhyatmika (Democracy video winner-Hillary Clinton award) and Maman Abdurokhman (BEM President UI) and finally SFT quiz and doorprize. At the end of the morning session we had breaking time for an hour. At 13.00 o’clock, we started to brief about “Fundraising Challenge” as the next agenda of this program. Fundraising Challenge is 2 weeks long activity (29 Jan – 10 Feb) to raise the funding to be donated to Cilincing fisherman community that needs public development funding in order to develop their environment.

Collaborating the students into 5 groups of fundraising, we give Rp 500.000 (around US$50) for each team as the capital for their activity to raise fund. Giving the group 40 minutes to discuss about their fundraising action plan, each group coordinator presented their action ideas to the entire forum and get prepared for the action on the next day. It was very interesting to see the students came up with various ideas to do this challenge: making cookies and chocolate and sell it in schools, doing street-musician, social donation box in front of National monument, etc. Their spirit is strong and creative ;)

The awesome thing I want to tell you is that, until 8th Feb. 5 fundraising groups had gathered donation as much as RP 8.000.000 (US$800) from the capital of RP 2.500.000 (250). This was amazing news!

Stay tuned with the blog and see how much money the participants succeed to raise for Cilincing Social Donation.! Good luck and see you soon..

Monthly Report

Happy New Year Everyone!!!
Hope you all spend and celebrate the festivity with full of joy and happiness in this holiday season!! So do we! in this new year, we have a surprising news from Taking it Global that we are awarded Youth Grant from the PEARSON FOUNDATION in order to support our initiative. This couldn’t have been more amazing, isn’t?!

Also, It’s been a quite long time for the preparation of SFT in Jakarta city. All the staffs have been working restlessly to make this preparation goes well. Printing all proposals, letters, and fliers to be given to invited schools, speakers for the programs, and Media Partners (Kompasmuda and Trax FM). Developing website, updating twitter and facebook in order to be a comprehensive center of information for public, Not to mention doing the surveys to the venues of our three main activities: (1) university of Indonesia, (2) Children Prison and rehabilitation, (3) Cilincing Fisherman Community in North Jakarta by partnering NGO Hope Worldwide- Indonesia.

December and January are the busiest month ever yet we are fortunate to have most of our staffs have ended their semester in university and have 1 month off campus. At the same time, the SMA (Senior high schools) are hard to reach as they also have holidays for 1-2 weeks. Consequently it takes quite long to invite and look forward to the confirmation from the schools. This inviting school was executed from December 15 to January 5.

In order to embrace more students from diverse schools we also open this program to public by conducting an online selection for participants. Every High School students in Jakarta would be allowed to apply their team (3-5 members) from one school in order to apply for the whole program. The selection are conducted through the online form in the website questioning about their reasons why to apply, their expectation to the programs, and to what extent they will contribute at the end of program (http://studentsfortomorrow.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=31&Itemid=91). Gege (our web developer) have worked overnight with this website making process, including all materials, online form, poster, flyer, all the layout and designs! 2 thumbs up for him!
We have sufficiently utilize the website and technology to support the program!

On January 8, we have all the speakers confirmed their attendance to the seminar as the speaker upon their own expertise. They are: Iwan Winanda (Soft Skil Trainer), Adhyatmika (Hillary Clinton Awardee -Democracy Video), Nina Nuraniyah (Social Entrepreneur), Imaduddin (BEM UI President), and UNWFP-Indonesia. It’s quite fortunate that they responsively confirm their attendance with high enthusiasm for this innovative intercultural youth project. These are the people who are going to inspire the student participants in the seminar on January 29.

On January 12, we went to the ministry of education and presented the brief of this initiative. Fortunately the ministry official was eager to support this program by issuing the official support letter. This letter will be thenceforth used as a legitimate recognition of SFT Program.

All in all, the program date is approaching that we have to get prepared very well and do meeting in staff division 2-3 times a week. With the spirit and keen efforts from all the staffs, I believe that this program will kick off to the ground very soon and hopefully create positive interaction and collaboration among students in Jakarta City as we aim for.

Date: 4 December 2010
Time: 10.00 am to 12.00 pm
Place: University of Indonesia

Realizing the importance of organisation and management know-how in conducting a youth project, IFL and SFT Indonesia held a "Capacity Building" on December 4th in university of Indonesia and inviting management lecturer, Pak Pantius, from the respective universities.

The participant feels captivated and inspired with some stories and knowledges from the professor. he well explained about the difference between the LEADER and MANAGER. There are many kind of leaders and manager, However, what mostly differs both of them is that LEADER posses aspiring personality (as a trait) that could motivate its members to move on. Within such youth organisation, the role of youht leader is so much pivotal. he/she will take roles to convince and inspire their fellow youths upon certain issues (such as education and poverty). Later on, leader will encourage the members to think creatively and speak up their ideas to improve the program. this is how the self-development and capacity building will grow within organisations.

Here are the most thrilling quotes from the capacity building session with Pak Pantius:

if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

T = Together
E = Each
A = Achieves
M = More
S = Success

With the combination of leadership and management skills, the organisation will grow and develop very well. Not to mention the teamwork and transparency are other pivotal aspect to be maintained.
